Veterans’ Health Week 2021

14 October 2021

This October, Mates4Mates are once again very excited to be participating in Veterans' Health Week. With over 30 activities planned, this is a great time for veterans and their families to join in and connect with like-minded people.

This year, the theme of Veterans' Health Week is 'Get Moving’, with veterans and their families across the nation encouraged to increase their physical activity.

Now, this theme is not telling you to that you need to join a gym or hit the treadmill, but rather encouraging you to simply get that body moving! Activities like yoga, dancing, walking the dog or swimming are low impact activities that will not only contribute to your physical health, but also help with emotional and mental wellbeing too.

And what’s more, staying active can:

  • Help you sleep better
  • Improve your concentration
  • Raise your energy levels
  • Improve your confidence
  • Boost your mood
  • Release stress
  • Lower anxiety.

So, how are you going to ‘Get Moving’ this week?

Thanks to funding from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, throughout the month of October, particularly during 16 - 24 October, Mates4Mates have several activities happening across our centres and online. With kayaking, walks, golf, yoga, drumming, a table tennis tournament, and more, there is something for everyone. For those who are unable to attend in person, we have a Veterans' Health Week themed online coffee group and yoga class planned.

Social activities such as these are great ways to make meaningful connections with others. So, whether you can only make it to an online coffee catch up or are keen to participate in several outdoor activities, involving yourself in Veterans' Health Week can contribute to an overall greater sense of wellbeing. And who knows, you may even find an awesome new hobby to continue in the future!
