Dr. Jonathan (Jon) Lane has been in the Australian Army since 1989 and is also an Afghanistan veteran. Jon is a clinician in private practice, as well as holding several different roles. These include his primary role as the Chief Psychiatrist for the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) and the veterans’ and families counselling service, Open Arms; the Psychiatry Lead for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine; a Lieutenant Colonel in Australian Army Reserve; and a member of multiple national and State advisory boards.
Jon's passion for improving the mental health of military, veteran, and emergency services personnel comes from his own lived experience, and he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2015 to pursue these goals. He completed a PhD from 2018-2023, developing and evaluating the effectiveness of transdiagnostic, peer led psychoeducation and skills-based group interventions for mental health problems for these personnel.
In 2018 and 2022, Jon was also the coach of the Australian Invictus team for archery because he believes that mental health is about the person functioning well in all domains of their lives.
