How do I know when to see a physiotherapist or an exercise physiologist?

Targeting all aspects of health and wellbeing is important for recovery. At Mates4Mates, our team of exercise physiologists (EP) and physiotherapists are here to support you through a range of services.

Both exercise physiologists and physiotherapists play an important role in supporting recovery from physical injuries and chronic conditions.

Both allied health professionals will use exercise and movement to improve health and wellbeing outcomes.

Exercise physiology is focused on how the body responds to exercise and long-term management of health conditions like diabetes, PTSD, cardiovascular disease and persistent pain.

Physiotherapy is focused on diagnosis, rehabilitation and restoring function in individuals with physical impairments or injuries.

When should I see a health professional?

There are a variety of reasons to see an exercise physiologist or physiotherapist, including if you have an injury, are in chronic pain and unsure how to manage it, you are pre- or post-surgery or have a chronic disease.

Our team will take time to learn about your health history and any injuries you’ve previously had or are currently dealing with. They will develop a plan to help you recover or learn to adapt to an injury. This will involve making lifestyle modifications such as changes to physical, mental and dietary behaviours.

If you are unsure about how you are moving or feel like improvements can be made, the team can assist with movement assessments and give you feedback and strategies moving forward. You can then discuss your health needs with your treating doctor ahead of receiving a referral.
