Move it or lose it

19 June 2020

Age related muscle loss is a natural part of the aging process, but the importance of continuing to build and maintain muscle has many functional and health benefits.

Possessing lean muscle helps with mobility, bone density, helps to increase our calorie burning efficiency, reduces the risk of falls and fractures, and makes us feel more confident and capable in life.

How you build muscle is up to you. It could be yoga, hill walking, body weight exercises or Pilates – it doesn’t have to be a heavy weights session in the gym, just something load bearing that feels good for you and your body and most importantly, is what you enjoy.

If the movement is functional and replicates activities of daily life, this increases the likelihood of you living independently as you age, and being able to continue with your hobbies, activities and household duties for as long as possible.

The good news is it is never too late to start. If you start slowly and build, your body will quickly adapt and you should notice positive changes in your energy levels, mood, sleep quality and endurance. Exercising with a friend, will further improve the experience and mood enhancing effects and keep you on track.

What activities are you doing this week?
